U.S. Flies Nuclear-Capable Bombers Over Middle East

(Worthy News) – Amid rising tensions with Iran, the U.S. military flew two nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to the Middle East Wednesday, the military confirmed. In a statement monitored by Worthy News, the U.S. Central Command overseeing military operations in the region said the flights were “to underscore the U.S. military’s commitment to regional security.”
It was also to “demonstrate a unique ability to rapidly deploy overwhelming combat power on short notice,” the U.S. Central Command warned.
The bombers were sent from the United States a week after the U.S. President Donald J. Trump accused Iran of firing “several rockets” at the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. He warned the Islamic nation of severe consequences if an American was killed.
Wednesday’s flight was the third bomber deployment in the Middle East within 45 days. It underscored U.S. concerns that Iran may seek to retaliate against U.S. interests to mark the first anniversary of the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Trump claimed he ordered the January 3 drone strike that killed Iran’s second most powerful figure at the time to prevent more attacks against Americans. He said at the time that Soleimani had “killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans.” He stressed that killing the general was needed because he “was plotting to kill many more” Americans and “should have been taken out many years ago.”
General Frank McKenzie, the U.S. Central Command commander, said the U.S. “continues to deploy combat-ready capabilities into the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility.”
He stressed these actions were “to deter any potential adversary. And make clear that we are ready and able to respond to any aggression directed at Americans or our interests.”
