Nineteen Pro-Life Laws Passed in 2020
(Worthy News) – Americans United for Life has reported that 13 states passed 19 pro-life laws in 2020, Lifesite News said Tuesday. Some of the new legislation includes provisions that require abortion providers to give women accurate information before they consent to terminate their pregnancy.
The states that passed pro-life laws this year are Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nebraska, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming, Lifesite News reports.
Among the new measures across the states is Florida’s new requirement that parental consent must be given for a minor to have an abortion. Meanwhile, Louisiana passed a pro-life constitutional amendment which reads: “To protect human life, nothing in this constitution shall be construed to protect a right to abortion or the taxpayer funding of abortion.”
New legislation in Idaho in Utah would prohibit abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned or the U.S. Supreme Court permits states to implement their own pro-life laws. Meanwhile, Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, and Kentucky have progressed with pro-life ballot initiatives and constitutional amendments, Lifesite News says.
According to research by Dr. Michael New, professor of social research and political science at the Catholic University of America and an associate scholar at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, pro-life laws do help to reduce the number of abortions, AUL said in its report.
Therefore, AUL said: “The national abortion rate continues its downward trend, and it is now the lowest rate since 1973, when Roe v. Wade legalized abortion.” Lifesite News notes that in 2017 there were 862,320 abortions in the U.S., down from an annual average of 1.5 million in the 1990s.
