Federal agencies launch investigation into “left-wing” unrest in Democrat-run cities

President Donald Trump announced Monday that the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice are starting a joint investigation into what the president called “left-wing civil unrest” in “Democrat-run cities,” VOA News reports. Trump added that over 200 people have now been arrested by federal agencies, including 100 in Portland, Oregon alone.

Following the death of George Floyd at the hands of police on May 25, the Democratic-controlled cities of Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago, St Louis, and Portland, among others, have become flashpoints for intense protests and rioting by groups including left-wing Black Lives Matter supporters and Antifascist activists. The unrest has resulted in the grievous loss of civilian and police lives, including that of David Dorn, a black 77-year-old retired St. Louis police captain who was killed by looters breaking into his friend’s business on June 2. There has also been massive damage and destruction of property.

Portland, in particular, has been the site of non-stop nightly protests and rioting ever since Floyd’s death. Then, in August, a caravan of Trump supporters in pick-up trucks began coming to the city, firing pepper spray and paintballs at demonstrators. One Trump supporter, Jay Bishop, was shot and killed during turmoil and clashes on August 30.

The Democratic-controlled city of Kenosha in Wisconsin joined the fray on August 23, after black man Jacob Blake was shot in the back seven times by police who had been trying to arrest him. Protests and unrest in the city soon followed. Moreover, armed civilians turned up claiming they were there to guard buildings and businesses from looters and arsonists. One of the armed civilians, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse from Illinois, subsequently shot and killed two people amid chaotic scenes of disorder.

Specifically referencing “left-wing” civil unrest in his press statement Monday, President Trump asserted: “In America, we will never surrender to mob rule, because if the mob rules, democracy is indeed dead.”
