(Worthy News) –
Calling on the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to reintroduce moderate language on its abortion platform, pro-life Democrats are warning their party’s current “extreme” stance on the issue risks alienating voters who would otherwise vote for the Biden-Harris ticket, Fox News reports. A draft platform released by Politico shows that the DNC supports the codification of Roe v Wade and tax-payer funding of abortion.

In a letter warning that the DNC position on abortion risked turning “large swathes of the United States” to the Republican Party, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and dozens of other Democratic politicians said the DNC should acknowledge “Americans have differing and deeply held views on abortion.” Therefore, the signatories said: “We support reintroducing the conscience language from 2000 into the 2020 platform.”

A particular area of concern for pro-life democrats is Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden’s reversal last year of his support for the Hyde Amendment – a law that prevents federal funding for abortion, in certain cases.

“The Hyde amendment has been necessary in building a more equal society,” Terrisa Bukovinac, a board member of the DNC-affiliated Democratic-Farmer-Labor party told Fox News. “It has saved more than 2 million people who are disproportionately black, indigenous, and children of color and we will not allow our party to pretend that eliminating this crucial safeguard is progress. We demand equality and we’re not going to stand by and watch our Party allow this exploitation to continue simply because the industry is bankrolling their candidates’ political aspirations.”

Describing an increasingly vocal pro-life movement among democrats, DFL executive director Kristen Day told Fox News: “We have people on the ground now that will be promoting the pro-life voice within the Democratic Party. We have had unprecedented growth and it is really exciting.”
