Locust Swarms Threaten Argentina, Brazil
By Stefan J. Bos, Special Correspondent Worthy News
(Worthy News) – Argentina and Brazil were on high alert Monday as a giant swarm of locusts began eating its way through crops in the region.
The feared insects, which can cover a distance of 150km (93 miles) in a day, have already traveled from Paraguay to Argentina, and authorities are concerned that Brazil and Uruguay could be next.
While they were not yet due to affect Brazil’s crops, the nation’s agriculture ministry declared a state of emergency in two southern states to allow officials to take preventive measures.
Video footage in troubled nations showed locals unable to see through their car windscreens due to the density of the flying locusts. Masses of the insects up to a foot deep were seen on tree trunks and other vegetation.
Experts say lockdowns related to the COVID-19 pandemic impacted operations to control the locust swarms in several countries.
Kenya and India, for instance, are also currently fighting locusts.
