Poll finds almost all Democrat undergraduates support defunding police; most Republican college students do not
(Worthy News) – A new survey of undergraduate college students found that 94% of Democrat responders support defunding of police (i.e. cutting police budgets to fund other community resources) while only 13% of Republican students do, The College Fix reported. The poll also found that a majority of Democrat responders believe rioting and looting are legitimate forms of protest against racial injustice and police brutality while almost all Republican responders believe they are not.
The survey was carried out on 1,500 responders taken from a pool of 270,000 students from 900 universities and colleges in all 50 states. The poll was taken on June 17 and June 18. Responders were asked two questions.
The first question was: “Do you support or oppose defunding the police (i.e. cutting police budgets to fund other community resources)?” Among Democrat students, 72% strongly supported the idea; 22% supported it; 2% opposed it and 4% strongly opposed it. Among Republican students, 65% strongly opposed it and 22% opposed it.
The second question was: “Are rioting and looting legitimate forms of protest against racial discrimination and police brutality in America today?” Among Democrat students, 61% said yes. Among Republican students, 90% said no.
Other polls on defunding police show a majority of Americans are against it, the Daily Wire reported. A Reuters poll found 57% of Americans are against it; an ABC News poll found 64% oppose it; a Morning Consult/Politico poll found 58% oppose it, and an Economist/YouGov poll found 53% are against it.
