(Worthy News) – Concerns remained Sunday that certain immigrants suffering from the coronavirus disease COVID-19 would not seek medical help after a U.S.Supreme Court ruling. The top court declined a request by U.S.states to halt a Trump administration policy temporarily on health grounds.

Under the rules introduced by President Donald Trump, it is harder for legal immigrants to become permanent residents if they use public benefits.

New York, joined by the states of Connecticut and Vermont and New York City, argued that the policy was hindering efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus. They said it was “deterring immigrants from accessing healthcare and essential public benefits tools for protecting the public.”

But the court rejected the states’ request with none of the nine justices publicly dissenting. However, it explained in this weekend’s ruling that its ruling didn’t prevent lawyers from going to a lower court.

In January, the court’s five conservative justices permitted the Trump administration policy to go into effect over the objections of its four liberals.
