(Worthy News) – The US COVID-19 death toll was 45,343 on Wednesday morning, Worldometers.info reports. The first known US fatality from coronavirus came on February 28 in Washington State. Currently, New York has the highest number of deaths with 19,693; Wyoming has the fewest with 6.

According to a report in the Jerusalem Post, the number of US deaths rose by over 2,600 on Tuesday alone: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Michigan had 800 fatalities between them. New York, the epicenter of the outbreak in America, recorded 481 new deaths on Tuesday – although Gov. Andrew Cuomo has expressed cautious optimism that the situation in his state is slowly improving.

On Wednesday the US had 819,175 confirmed cases of coronavirus, around two-thirds of the global total of over 2.5 million. The fatality rate has been around 5% compared to the 10% rate in the hardest-hit European countries, Italy and Spain, the New York Times reports.

The highest number of deaths in the US in one day was on April 15, when there were 2,806 fatalities. The highest number of new cases was on April 4 with 35,392 newly recorded infections.

Nevertheless, the Jerusalem Post reports, the rate of infection in the US appears to have slowed this week, with fewer than 30,000 new cases a day recorded for the last three days.
