Trump to order temporary suspension on immigration to US

(Worthy News) – President Trump announced on Monday night that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he will be ordering a temporary suspension on immigration to the US. In a post on Twitter, the President said: “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!“
In measures aimed at slowing the spread of the virus, the US has already suspended processing applications for non-worker immigration, Politico reports. Moreover, travel restrictions from China, Europe, Canada, and Mexico are also already in place. Therefore, Politico reports, “the impact would probably address only immigrants coming here to work.”
The President did not explain what specific actions would be taken through this suspension measure. According to Politico sources, the Department of Homeland Security is still drafting the executive order.
Responding to Trump’s announcement, president of NumbersUSA Roy Beck told Politico: “With tens of millions of Americans who want to work full time not able to, most immigration makes no sense today, and to allow it to continue at its current level at this time would show a callous disregard for those enduring deep economic suffering.”
It is expected the decision will not be welcomed by the US Chamber of Commerce and the business community generally: there are concerns that not enough unemployed Americans will agree to do certain jobs that are normally done by foreign workers and which are critical to the economy.
