Haredi in Israel the lone resisters of government takeover
by Jordan Hilger, Worthy News Correspondent
(Worthy News) – Israel’s ultra-orthodox Haredi community is facing fines and arrests for resisting draconian government regulations that forbid prayer services and prevent a person from walking 328 feet outside their home except in emergencies.
Medics from Magen David Adom were pelted with rocks Monday in Jerusalem’s ultra-orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood for trying to perform a mandatory and unsolicited coronavirus test on residents, as police broke up synagogue services, arrested four people, and fined 30 more.
Israeli Health Minister Yaakov Litzman condemned the Haredi and framed the state as the agent of God in the crisis, saying what the ultra-orthodox were doing was “grave behavior that is contrary to Jewish law and harms those who are performing holy work for the public’s health and security.”
In a video of the operation, Haredi can be seen calling police invading their neighborhoods to forbid gatherings and administer fines of NIS 500 ($140) “Nazis” and “criminals,” one synagogue even having been closed down for 30 days.
