(Worthy News) – An Iranian convert from Islam arrested during anti-government protests following the downing of a Ukrainian jet in Tehran last month was released on bail from Iran’s most dangerous prison after over a month during which her whereabouts were not known.
Fatameh Mohammadi, a 21-year-old Christian woman and outspoken critic of the regime, was holed up in Qarchak women’s prison in the desert east of Tehran following her arrest on Jan. 12th until she was released on a $2,250 bail ahead of her court hearing Monday.
“The news of her release on bail is a welcomed break from the uncertainty in her case to date,” International Christian Concern said.
Mohammadi had been arrested, it is thought, for social media posts criticizing the regime for its “soft repression” and for inculcating “false beliefs” in the populace “through selective coverage of the news.”
Iran is ninth on Open Doors USA’s World Watch List for the persecution of Christians, but has seen an explosion of underground faith, with the number of secret believers nearly doubling in the last four years.
