(Worthy News) – The Iraqi President has threatened to resign instead of nominating an Iran-backed candidate for Prime Minister against the will of protestors.

Experts say that Barham Salih has decided to side with the popular will in the recent uprising against Iranian interference in his country, doing all he can without the constitutional power to outright reject candidates chosen by Iran.

“By saying he is ready to resign he is responding to pressure from Iran and its allies, saying he would rather quit than be a scapegoat,” said Ahmed Younis, a political analyst. “He pulled the rug from under the pro-Iran parties and chose to stand with the protesters.”

More than 450 people have been killed in popular protests in Iraq that began October 1st.
