Vulgar Sex Assembly Held at Santa Rosa High School without Parental Notice or Consent
April 19, 2001
Santa Rosa, CA – This week, several concerned parents of Santa Rosa High School students contacted the Pacific Justice Institute after they had learned that the school had put on a general assembly for all the students called “Sex and Stuff”. The assembly included vulgar, inappropriate sex scenes and recommended alternative sex acts instead of abstinence. Also discussed were topics such as sexual molestation, rape, unwanted pregnancy, and the HIV virus.
The school conducted this assembly after parents had explicitly made it clear through an opt out form that their children were not supposed to participate in any activities during a “Week of Diversity”. The parents had been given a schedule of seminars for the Week of Diversity. The materials sent to parents did not include any mention of the general assembly, or its questionable content. The lack of notice to parents regarding the assembly was in direct violation of the California Education Code.
“No school district can expect to directly undermine the rights of parents without being held accountable,” said Brad Dacus, president of the Pacific Justice Institute. “The Pacific Justice Institute is in the process of working with parents to assist them in recognizing their legal remedies in this matter.”
The Pacific Justice Institute is a non-profit 501(c)(3) legal defense organization specializing in the defense of religious freedom, parental rights, and other civil liberties.
