Iraqi Parliament passes discriminatory law

By Joseph DeCaro, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – Late last month, the Iraqi Parliament passed a law mandating that the Christian children of fathers who convert to Islam and those of mothers who marry Muslims will all automatically become Muslims themselves, whether they want to, or not!

According to Barnabas Aid, the new law contradicts Iraq’s own Constitution, specifically its provisions for: ethnic and religious diversity (Article 3); protection against “religious coercion” (Article 37.2) and freedom of “thought, conscience and ideology” (Article 42).

However, the law has not been enforced in semiautonomous Kurdistan. In fact, Kurdish Bishop Rabban al-Qas has warned that the new law poses an existential threat to Christianity in Iraq.

“We are facing a genocide in a country that knows only death and liberticidal laws,” he said.

An amendment proposed by Iraq’s non-Muslim communities that would have ensured that minors could keep the religion of their birth until the age of 18 was overwhelming rejected by the country’s Muslim majority.
