(MNN / Worthy News)– The U.S. State Department issued a warning in Uganda of possible attacks. The warning indicates that “churches” face “specific” threats from al-Shabaab, a Somalia-based terrorist organization. The warning as more peacekeeping troops arrive in Somalia.

Security Message for U.S. Citizens:

This message is to alert U.S. citizens that the U.S. Embassy has received information regarding a specific terrorist threat in Kampala. The threat information indicates a group of attackers may be preparing to strike places of worship in Kampala, particularly churches, including some that may be frequented by expatriates, in May or June. The Embassy cautions U.S. citizens to exercise judgment when deciding whether to visit places of worship and other crowded public places and/or events that are potential targets to terrorists, and to avoid such places during May and June. — U.S. State Department Issued Warning

Over the past few weeks, a rise of attacks throughout the region has intensified. Nearly two weeks ago, a grenade was lobbed near a mosque in Garissa, Kenya. The explosion killed one and injured 11. On May 16, an explosion in Gikomba, Nairobi killed 10 and wounded more than 70 people. On May 5, a twin explosion killed 3 and injured 86 along Kenya’s Thika highway. While each of these attacks haven’t been claimed, they bear the markings of al-Shabaab, which has been extending its reach outside of Somalia.
