Gospel for Asia Bible Students Jailed
BAGALKOTE, KARNATAKA, INDIA (ANS)– Four Gospel for Asia (GFA) Bible college students have been released after spending two days in a jail in Bagalkote, Karnataka, on false charges brought by a radical Hindu group.
Christian media reports from India indicate that the fanatics recently attacked the GFA students and dragged them to the local police station for allegedly converting Hindus.
The four students — Jaganath, Simon, Santosh and Vijay — were on their six-month outreach training when they were attacked.
When the extremists complained to the police that the four students were converting Hindus by distributing Christian literature, the police immediately arrested them and put them in the jail.
When the local pastors asked the police for their release, the police are quoted as saying: “It is good for them to be in jail. Otherwise the activists may kill them.”
Christian leaders said later the police statement was simply a cover for harassing the students.
The students were released two days later after complaints from local Dalit leaders and pastors.
