PARIS/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – European powers, including Britain, France, and Germany, say they must participate in any future negotiations on war-torn Ukraine’s fate amid growing tensions about the U.S. role in those talks.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump already held talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, while his defense secretary warned Kyiv that it should not expect its pre-2014 borders or NATO alliance membership. He later spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

That has raised concern within the European Union.

“Our shared objectives should be to put Ukraine in a position of strength. Ukraine and Europe must be part of any negotiations,” a joint statement of seven countries and the EU’s executive European Commission said.

“Ukraine should be provided with strong security guarantees. A just and lasting peace in Ukraine is a necessary condition for strong transatlantic security,” the statement stressed, adding that the European powers were looking forward to discussing the way ahead with their American allies.

On Wednesday, ministers from France, Britain, Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, and the European Commission met with Ukraine’s foreign minister in Paris.

Russia invaded Ukraine fully in February 2022, and since then, more than a million people are believed to have been killed.
