(Worthy News) – President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday night that he had a “productive conversation” with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo about combating the illegal flow of fentanyl into the United States and addressing illegal immigration. Trump added that Mexico had agreed to take immediate action to prevent illegal immigrants from reaching the southern border.
Trump prioritized border security during his campaign, vowing to crack down on illegal immigration if re-elected.
Trump revealed on Truth Social Wednesday that he discussed border security and reducing fentanyl flow with Mexican President Sheinbaum Pardo.
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The leaders spoke a day after Sheinbaum expressed her intent to engage with Trump, following his renewed threat of a 25% tariff on Mexican and Canadian exports over illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump added.
Sheinbaum previously criticized Trump’s tariff threat, arguing that drug issues were a U.S. problem and warning of a reciprocal tariff on American goods.
“We do not produce weapons, we do not consume the synthetic drugs. Unfortunately, we have the people who are being killed by crime that is responding to the demand in your country,” Sheinbaum stated.
In a statement on Truth Social, Trump highlighted discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum about addressing the drug crisis, including measures to curb the flow of drugs into the U.S. and tackle domestic consumption.
“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs,” Trump stated.
President-elect Trump is set to be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, 2025, marking the official start of his new term in office.
